Omega Ophthalmics is pleased to announce the successful results of its animal study for a prosthetic capsular bag.

The animal study was performed by Drs. Nick Mamalis and Lilliana Werner at the University of Utah. The study, which lasted four weeks, was designed to prove form and fit in rabbit eyes using the latest prototype of the Omega device.

Evaluation of accommodation in a rabbit eye was performed after four weeks, a period of time equivalent to two years of development in the human eye. The study revealed that the latest generation of the Omega device fitted and centered itself perfectly within the eye.

Dr. Werner commented on the results, saying that Omega's prototype looked "significantly better" than the world's leading Intraocular Lens after four weeks in a rabbit eye.

Omega Ophthalmics has been conducting animal studies as part of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process for medical devices. Clinical animal studies have shown this capsular bag to be remarkably effective in helping maintain effective lens position as compared to other intraocular lenses, a critical component of cataract surgery that determines whether or not a patient will need post-operative corrective lenses. Human trials are scheduled to start later this year.

Cataract surgery is the single most common surgical procedure performed in the United States annually. With the global cataracts market currently projected to reach $4.3 billion by 2017, Omega’s capsular bag is well-positioned to become the new standard lens for cataract surgery.
